The Melody of Planica Gets a Unique Form

Planica is a place where pride takes flight. It is a unique and the biggest national sporting celebration, bringing all of Slovenia together, and it has its own iconic melody – a famous fan chant that echoes whenever a ski jumper flies beyond 235 meters. This unmistakable tune is the legendary Avsenik piece “Planica, Planica,” which fills visitors with energy and sparks strong cheering emotions. The chant, the waving of Slovenian flags, and the unique experience together form the very “heart” of Planica.

For this reason, the OK Planica organizing committee decided to capture the frequency of Planica’s iconic sound and the energy of the fans following the jumps of Domen Prevc and all Slovenian “eagles” who impress in Planica. Using a special computer program, the frequency and intensity of the sound will be analyzed and recorded in real time, and the collected data will then be transformed into a 3D computer model. During the event itself, this model will be printed with an advanced 3D printer into a unique trophy.
This innovative creation will be pure sound and energy transformed into a physical form – a trophy that will be awarded on Sunday, March 29, 2026, to the winner of the Planica 7 competition. The shape of the trophy is created by sound, meaning each Planica will have its own unique form – a signature of its time. The “frequency of victory” is the first concept of its kind in the world, as the winner will receive the sound and soul of Planica in a tangible, permanent form.
To give the entire concept of transforming sound into a unique Planica 7 trophy an even broader dimension, OK Planica partnered with the Association SAZAS. Since SAZAS represents Slovenian composers, music authors, and rights holders, and through international cooperation also represents repertoires from around the world, it was a natural step to connect Planica’s sound, musical heritage, and contemporary creativity to create something historic.
At their joint initiative, the project will continue even after the event concludes, when composers will explore ideas within the captured sound recording of this year’s Planica and create new musical compositions inspired by its energy and sound.
“The project has an important educational and awareness-raising dimension, as it brings the public closer to the process of creating musical works and highlights the importance of intellectual property as a fundamental condition for the creation of musical works, as well as the importance of its protection. A sound that the crowd experiences as a moment can, in the creative process of a composer, become inspiration for a new musical work,” said Marcel Škerjanc, Managing Director of SAZAS.
The Ski Association of Slovenia, OK Planica, and the Association SAZAS are extremely proud to connect Planica, its sound, musical creativity, and its unique energy in this way, and to share it with Slovenians and fans around the world.
